Bayou Petit Caillou
Chauvin, Terrebonne County · Louisiana
A bird sanctuary sits behind this roadside sign. Orleans Audubon Society created the Marguerite Moffett Audubon Sanctuary on December 31, 2001, as its second, on land donated by Dr. Marcel Remson and Billie Cole Remson; it is named for the doctor's aunt. The 108 acres of brackish marsh and shallow water off Highway 56 are reached by a 625-foot boardwalk to an overlook above Lake Quitman. Least bitterns, clapper rails and seaside sparrows nest there, white pelicans winter, and spoonbills and egrets visit. Admission is free, but the sanctuary was listed as closed for repairs, so check first.
