Bannock War
Elmore County · Idaho
For the Bannock who fought here on August 9, 1878, the island in Bennett Creek was a stop on the way home to Fort Hall after a war that had carried them into Oregon. It was not quite the last fight: the state's own list of engagements records another at Henry's Lake on August 27, and the last holdouts were rounded up in Yellowstone. Afterward 543 Paiute and Bannock prisoners were sent to the Yakama reservation in Washington Territory, the government tightened control over leaving Fort Hall, and some refugees joined the Sheepeater band in the Salmon River mountains.
