Ashley County in the Civil War
Hamburg, Ashley County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
The Longview raid was aimed at a bridge. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says Col. Powell Clayton, at Pine Bluff, sent about 100 picked cavalrymen of the First Indiana and Fifth Kansas under Lieutenants Grover Young and Frank Greathouse to destroy the Confederate pontoon bridge over the Saline that linked Camden with Gaines' Landing. They reached the camp unseen in the dark and destroyed the bridge and 35 loaded wagons. They also took 300 horses and mules, a payroll chest holding more than $60,000, and several enslaved people reached Union lines. The ride covered 80 miles in 24 hours.
