3rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment
Hamburg, Ashley County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
The 3rd Arkansas began with a rejection. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says two Ashley County companies raised by Hamburg lawyer Van H. Manning and Dr. William H. Tebbs were refused admittance to the Confederate army at Vicksburg. Sen. Albert Rust helped them enlist, then raised eight more companies in Union, Drew, Ashley and Hot Spring counties. The regiment was mustered into service at Lynchburg, Virginia, on July 5, 1861, with Rust as colonel; he became a brigadier general in March 1862 and Manning took command. An eleventh company, L, joined later that year, from Ashley and Drew counties.
