Ashley County Court House
Hamburg, Ashley County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
Ashley County was cut from Drew County in the area once called the Great Wilderness, and Hamburg was laid out in October 1849 and made the county seat. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says the site was chosen partly because the organizing law required the seat to lie within five miles of the county's geographic center. The courthouse and jail were built in 1850, among the town's first public buildings, and the courthouse stood in the middle of the town square for more than a century before it was moved a block away. Hamburg's population reached 1,260 by 1900.
