Abraham Lincoln

Albany County · Wyoming
Erected by Wyoming State Parks Commission, 1959

The motto over the commission's names comes from Lincoln's annual message of December 1862, where thinking anew answers the dogmas of the quiet past. Robert Russin, a University of Wyoming art professor, modeled the head deliberately rough and had it cast in Mexico City in more than thirty bronze pieces bolted together, the money put up by the Rawlins physician Charles W. Jeffrey. It was unveiled on October 18, 1959 at Sherman Summit, the Lincoln Highway's high point, and moved here when Interstate 80 opened. The bronze also casts six commission members and governors.
