5th Arkansas Infantry Regiment
Paragould, Greene County · Arkansas
Erected 2013
The Fifth Arkansas is remembered as a hard-fighting regiment, but its first year was spent waiting. Ten companies from Poinsett, Bradley, Greene and Prairie counties were organized at Gainesville on June 28, 1861, under Colonel David Cross, a Poinsett County planter. The regiment spent Shiloh on guard duty in Mississippi, and its first combat was Perryville on October 8, 1862, where four men were killed. Murfreesboro cost 12 killed and 135 wounded. At Chickamauga it lost 38 killed, including Colonel Lucius Featherston, and in 1863 it was merged with the Thirteenth Arkansas.
