1825 Rocky Mountain Rendezvous
Sweetwater County · Wyoming
The quotation the panel leads with is the least reliable account of this gathering. Beckwourth, telling his life to Thomas Bonner some three decades later, remembered eight hundred souls and whiskey going off like water. Ashley himself counted about 120 men, and his inventory for 1825 lists no liquor at all, a lack the later rendezvous made up. Among the 120 were some 25 men who had deserted the Hudson's Bay Company. Ashley left with about 9,000 pounds of beaver, reached St. Louis on October 4, and sold out of the trade the next year.
