The Route at a Glance

The roadStops

Trail Ridge Road carries US-34 across Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park to Grand Lake, about forty-eight miles, climbing to 12,183 feet, with some eight miles above 11,000 feet. Allow an hour and a half without stops, and a good deal longer with them.

The route starts in Estes Park, where the Stanley Hotel stands on its rise above town; F. O. Stanley built roads up the canyons so his steam cars could reach it. It enters the park at the Fall River entrance and climbs through Horseshoe Park, where Old Fall River Road, the first road over these mountains, turns off up the valley as a one-way gravel climb in summer. Trail Ridge itself was built to replace it. Construction began in September 1929; contractors working only the four snow-free months of each year finished the seventeen miles from Deer Ridge to Fall River Pass in July 1932 and reached Grand Lake in 1938. They held the grade to seven percent and salvaged tundra sod to lay back over the road banks. About 150 men worked on it at the peak.

Above treeline the road runs along the crest past Rock Cut and the high point to the Alpine Visitor Center at Fall River Pass, at 11,796 feet the highest visitor center in the National Park Service, though it was closed when the road opened in 2026. It crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass and drops by switchbacks into the Kawuneeche Valley, where the young Colorado River runs through meadows and the Holzwarth Historic Site keeps the cabins of a 1920s dude ranch. Grand Lake is at the bottom.

Plows start in mid-April and the road usually opens to through traffic in late May, closing again with the autumn snows. In summer and early fall a timed-entry reservation is required to enter the park in the middle of the day; in 2026 that ran from May 22 to October 12 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
