White County Court House
Searcy, White County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
Searcy's court square exists because of a Quaker surveyor. Israel Merrick Moore, a Pennsylvanian, laid out the town in 1850, after a dispute over the site that went to the U.S. Supreme Court had held up its growth. He named the streets after Philadelphia's and donated land for churches, Spring Park and the square. The county court had first met in 1836 at David Crise's home, and the present courthouse went up in 1872. It is on the National Register and is called the oldest functioning courthouse in Arkansas.
