Action at Whitney's Lane
Kensett, White County · Arkansas
Erected 2010
A short fight on the West Point road east of Searcy decided where an army went. In May 1862 Samuel Curtis's Army of the Southwest was edging toward Little Rock, short of supplies. About a hundred Texas cavalrymen under Major Emory Rogers, with some fifty local men, surrounded a Union guard sheltering behind a rail fence, and about 22 Federals died and 33 were wounded. Curtis, hearing of it, believed a strong force lay ahead and turned back at Caney Creek. By late June he was marching for Helena instead, and Little Rock stayed Confederate until September 1863.
