Whiskeytown

The Post Office would not say the name. For a century the town had post offices called Stella, Blair, Whiskey Creek and Schilling, because Washington found Whiskeytown unwholesome, until the Women's Improvement League won the real name in 1952. Ten years later the reservoir began to fill over the town. The post office and store were moved above the waterline, and President Kennedy remarked on the name when he dedicated the dam in 1963. Clear Creek and Whiskey Creek were Wintu homeland. Nothing cast marks the landmark.
