View of the Rockies
Springer, Colfax County · New Mexico
The panel that stood here in 2012 had a second face for the plains behind the viewer, ending on carbon dioxide found underground. That gas lies to the east in the Bravo Dome and Bueyeros fields, struck in 1916 by a well drilled for oil and first tapped in 1931 to make dry ice. It found its market in the 1980s, piped south to push more oil out of old Permian Basin wells. The replacement board, standing by 2018, kept the mountains, dropped the plains, and carries a map on its back.
