Two Miles North of Here
Swisher County · Texas
Erected by State of Texas, 1936
No major fighting of the Red River War took place in Swisher County, though army columns crossed it again and again in pursuit of the Comanches. The war was fought against Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne bands, peoples now represented by the Comanche Nation, the Kiowa Tribe and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. Tule Canyon is where Tule Creek drops off the edge of the Llano Estacado on its way to Palo Duro Canyon. It has been identified as one of the canyons Coronado saw, and the Texan Santa Fe Expedition crossed it in 1841.
