Tulare Assembly Center
Tulare, Tulare County · California
Nothing marks the camp. Of California's assembly centers, Tulare's is the only one with no plaque, marker or memorial of any kind. From April to September 1942 it held 5,061 people, up to 4,978 at once, most from the coast north of Los Angeles, from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties, and from Pasadena, Gardena and Torrance; nearly all went on to Gila River. High school students in Tulare began pushing for a memorial a decade ago, and as of 2026 its installation is hoped for in 2027 or 2028.
