Truth or Consequences
Truth or Consequences, Sierra County · New Mexico
In March 1950 Ralph Edwards, host of the NBC quiz show, promised to broadcast its tenth-anniversary program from the first town that renamed itself for it. Hot Springs held a special election on March 31 and voted 1,294 to 295 for the change, and the show went out from the newly named town the next evening, April 1. Edwards came back for the town's Fiesta on the first weekend of May every year for the next fifty years, often bringing Hollywood performers, and the town still keeps Ralph Edwards Day each April 1.
