Trussell-Winchester Adobe

Erected by the California State Park Commission in cooperation with the Santa Barbara Historical Society, 1957
Horatio Gates Trussell came from Orland, Maine, and finished this house in 1854 with adobe walls and almost nothing else that was local. The steamer Winfield Scott had struck Anacapa Island the year before, and her timbers became his roof, his floors and his millwork. The plan and the taste are New England. In 1882 the adobe passed to the Winchesters, another Maine family, and stayed in that line until Katherine Bagg Hastings died in 1955 and left it to the historical society.

Trussell-Winchester Adobe Built in 1854 by Captain Horatio Gates Trussell of Orland, Maine. Partly constructed of material from wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott on Anacapa Island. Acquired by the Winchesters in 1882. Bequeathed in 1955 to the Santa Barbara Historical Society by Katherine Bagg Hastings, niece of Miss Sarah Winchester. Registered Historical Landmark No.559 Plaque placed by California State Park Commission in cooperation with Santa Barbara Historical Society, October 12, 1957
