Historical Marker
Town of Gunter, on Old Gunter Ranch
Gunter, Grayson County · Texas
Erected 1968
Sources disagree about Gunter, the town and the man. The marker says Jot Gunter was born in North Carolina; the Handbook of Texas says Georgia, and that he read law in Oran M. Roberts's office, moved to Dallas in 1888 to deal in real estate, and came to Sherman about 1895 to manage his property. He died in San Antonio in 1907. The Handbook's town entry says Gunter was organized in 1902 when the Frisco railway arrived and incorporated in 1924, and names a John Gunter, cattleman and surveyor, as the donor of the townsite.
