Town of Epiphany
Hanson County · South Dakota
The bishop who named Epiphany had come to Dakota as a missionary. Martin Marty, born in Canton Schwyz, Switzerland, in 1834 and a Benedictine of Einsiedeln, was first abbot of St. Meinrad in Indiana before he left in July 1876 for Standing Rock to work among the Lakota, whose Hunkpapa band called him Black Robe Lean Chief. Leo XIII made him vicar apostolic of Dakota in 1879 and, on November 26, 1889, first bishop of the new Diocese of Sioux Falls, the years in which the plaque places Epiphany's founding. He died at St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 1896.
