Town of Cat Spring
Schlopata, Austin County · Texas
Erected 1936
Cat Spring's settlers came from the duchies of Oldenburg and Westphalia, led by Ludwig Anton Siegmund von Roeder and Robert Kleberg, and many had been drawn by the letters of Friedrich Ernst, who had settled nearby on Mill Creek in 1831. The name comes from a puma that one of Leopold von Roeder's sons killed at a spring of the San Bernard near the family farm. The Rev. Louis C. Ervendberg organized a German Protestant congregation here in the early 1840s, and in 1856 the town formed the Cat Spring Agricultural Society, the earliest in Texas.
