Tie Hack Memorial
Fremont County · Wyoming
Erected by Wyoming Tie & Timber Company, 1946
The bronze is dated 1946, though the carving above it was set up and dedicated in 1948. It is a three-and-a-half-ton block of Indiana's Bedford limestone, cut in relief by Boris Gilbertson, then 37 and the son-in-law of Ricker Van Metre, president of the Wyoming Tie and Timber Company that paid for it: a hack with broadaxe and saw, a skidding team behind him, a river man with a pike pole. In the war years before it went up, about 140 German prisoners of war from a camp on Little Warm Springs Creek also worked as tie hacks.
