The Missouri Swamp Fox Is Captured in Pocahontas
Pocahontas, Randolph County · Arkansas
Erected 2006
Thompson's capture in Pocahontas began a year in Union prisons. After he was taken in August 1863, he was held in turn at the Gratiot and Alton military prisons, at Fort Delaware and at Johnson's Island. Wikipedia's biography says he was exchanged in 1864 for a Union general. He then rejoined the war with Sterling Price's Missouri expedition. In March 1865 he took over the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas and surrendered that year. He died of tuberculosis in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1876.
