The Great Highway of the Northwest: The Yellowstone Trail
Yellowstone County · Montana
The association behind this road proved it with a stunt. To mark the route's completion from Chicago to Seattle, its secretary, Hal Cooley, organized a relay of twenty-one cars carrying a letter from Chicago's mayor, William Hale Thompson, to Seattle's, Hiram Gill. The first leg left the Chicago Automobile Club at noon on June 15, 1915, and the drivers, handing the letter on along this valley among other places, aimed to cover some 2,445 miles in a hundred hours. Newspapers reported they made it in about ninety-seven.
