The Fort Union Formation and the Ice Age
Sheridan County · Montana
The town around this panel is named for the fuel the plains lacked. In the usual story a cattle outfit's cook was trying to light damp buffalo chips on a cold day when Dutch Henry Ieuch, a wagon boss for the Diamond Cattle Company and the best-known outlaw of the Big Muddy, told him he would find plenty wood two miles up the creek. The creek took the name and passed it to the town, whose post office opened in 1902. Another version sends cattlemen ahead to a stand of small timber where the town now stands.
