Texan Army Crossing of Buffalo Bayou (San Jacinto)

Harrisburg, Harris County · Texas
Erected 1936

The plaque stops at the crossing. On the morning of April 19 Houston wrote to Henry Raguet, "It is the only chance for saving Texas." Private Ellis Benson remembered crossing to the side the enemy held, then marching into the night with nothing to eat in cool, misty weather. At dawn on April 20 the army moved down the bayou and at Lynch's Ferry took a boat loaded with supplies for Santa Anna. That afternoon Sidney Sherman's cavalry skirmished with Mexican infantry, and Olwyn J. Trask had his thigh broken; he died at Galveston about three weeks later.
