Terry County
Brownfield, Terry County · Texas
Erected 1936
Parts of the county lie within Mexican grants made to Stephen J. Wilson in 1826 and John Charles Beales in 1832, never settled because of the Texas Revolution. After its 1876 creation it was attached in turn to Young, Throckmorton, Howard and Martin counties. Ranching came with the state's ten-year grazing leases on school land in the 1890s: the DOV and QIV in 1889, then the Nunn Ranch, whose well near Meadow was the county's first, and Englishman Q. Bone's 100-section TFW in 1894. The county counted twenty-one people in 1890.
