Terrell County
Sanderson, Terrell County · Texas
Erected 1936
Most of Terrell County lies on the Stockton Plateau, 2,357 square miles of rocky limestone country between 1,300 and 4,000 feet, where deep canyons carry floodwater to the Rio Grande and the Pecos and cliffs keep livestock from both rivers. Independence, King, Myers, Cedar and Geddes springs rise here, but windmills and tanks water most stock on about fifteen inches of rain a year. Many local people brew ojasen and gobernadora leaves as medicinal teas, candelilla yields wax and guayule has been used for rubber. Angora goats and sheep make mohair and wool the county's chief farm products.
