Swift's Stone Corral

Nothing cast marks the corral, which stands on posted private land about a thousand feet south of Maxwell-Sites Road. Granville Swift and his partner Frank Sears built it about 1850 from the flat stones lying across these hills, because the country had no timber for fencing. The stones outlasted Swift's adobe near Orland, and the creek beside them carries their name. So now does a recreation area planned for the Sites Reservoir, approved in 2023 for the valley to the west. This was Hill Patwin country.
