Steele's Academy
Pennington, Trinity County · Texas
Erected 1936
Daniel Webster Steele taught at two East Texas schools now remembered separately. The Handbook of Texas says he opened the Cold Springs Female Institute in 1854, and it names him Pennington College's first teacher and its president until 1872. Chartered in 1870, the college offered primary, academic and collegiate classes in two twenty-week sessions. Its 1869 report described a new building and a library that gained forty volumes from Sheldon Smith of New York. Enrollment peaked above 100 in 1873, and the school closed by 1882.
