St. John Catholic Church (of Bomarton)

Bomarton, Baylor County · Texas
Erected 1970

Bomarton was founded in 1906, when the Wichita Valley was extended from Seymour to Abilene, and named for W. H. Bomar, an early settler. Tom McClure opened a post office in his store that year, and B. B. Calfee and J. R. Snyder ran another. A school followed in 1907, churches went up between 1908 and 1910, and two cotton gins were running by 1914. Saturday marketing and baseball made it lively, and a large open pasture served its milk cows. It held about 600 people from 1920 through 1940, then declined to fifteen by 2000.
