Snelling Courthouse
Snelling, Merced County · California
Erected by Native Sons of the Golden West, Yosemite Parlor No. 24, 1930
No state plaque stands here, and the state never wrote its own description of the landmark: the register entry is the Native Sons' 1930 bronze, copied down to its dedication to the memory of our pioneers. That bronze marks the county's seventy-fifth birthday more than the building. The courthouse went up in 1857, when Snelling was the seat of Merced County, and it served later as a local court after the seat moved to the new railroad town of Merced in 1872. It still stands on Main Street.
