Small Town - Badger Clark

Meade County · South Dakota
Erected by Farmers State Bank, Faith; South Dakota Department of Transportation and South Dakota State Historical Society, 1974

A poem about small towns stands half a mile outside one, placed in 1974 by Faith's Farmers State Bank with the state. Badger Clark, its author, was named South Dakota's first poet laureate in 1937 and signed at least one letter as its poet lariat. He grew up in a Deadwood parsonage, learned cowboy life on an Arizona ranch near Tombstone, and lived out his years in a cabin in Custer State Park. His Cowboy's Prayer still circulates, often credited to Anonymous.
