Site of the Town of Lamar
Fulton, Aransas County · Texas
Erected 1936
Lamar was built as a rival within sight of Power's house. James W. Byrne, George Robert Hull and George Armstrong laid it out on Lookout Point across the channel from Aransas City, and Power, who could see it from his gallery, fought it. Byrne's group asked President Lamar to move the customhouse, claiming more than twice Aransas City's population, and won. The Karankawas, its earliest people, sometimes protected settlers from Comanches. After the war only shellcrete ruins and the chapel stood, and by 1915 Lamar had a hotel, a finishing school and twenty-five homes.
