Site of the Town of Alabama
Austonio, Houston County · Texas
Erected 1936
Jacob Allbright, the county's first clerk, settled on a bluff on the east bank of the Trinity and, in a county biography's words, established the town of Alabama there, with a ferry and a warehouse and commercial business. The 1841 charter named eleven trustees for Trinity College, yet the county history excerpted on TXGenWeb says it is not known for certain that the college was ever organized. An academy near the town advertised a five-month term in 1860 at $10 a student. Steamboats gave way to railroads, and the post office closed in 1878.
