Site of the Last Battle
Shelbyville, Shelby County · Texas
Erected 1936
Two sides remembered the August 1844 fight under two names: the Regulators called it the Church Hill Battle, the Moderators called it Helen's Defeat. The Handbook of Texas says about 225 Moderators attacked 62 Regulators near Shelbyville, then took a log meetinghouse four miles from Hilliard's Bridge, where Watt Moorman made a surprise attack. Legends of America gives more than 200 against some 60. Casualties were few and the result indecisive. Houston's militia order of August 15 ended the war.
