Site of Old Customhouse
San Augustine, San Augustine County · Texas
Erected 1966
The Handbook of Texas puts the customs duties collected here on imports from the United States at $62,105.90 over the life of the republic, and says the customs office also served as the town's municipal building at first. Kenneth L. Anderson was its collector: President Mirabeau B. Lamar appointed him, the Senate confirmed him on November 21, 1839, and he served until he ran for the Texas House in 1841. The same Handbook entry dates the new two-story brick courthouse that took over the town's business to 1854.
