Site of Mission Nuestra Senora del Rosario

Goliad, Goliad County · Texas
Erected 1936

Captain Manuel Ramírez de la Piscina of La Bahía named the mission for the church of his home town in Spain. The Cujanes it was built for were Karankawan people of the coast, and their name came to stand for all Karankawan groups except the Copanes. Most came in winter and left in spring, when they could feed themselves; only twenty-one had been baptized by 1758. The mission's ranch grew to 30,000 cattle by 1780. Nearly abandoned in 1781, it was reopened in 1789, formally joined to Refugio in 1807, and secularized only in 1831.
