Site of Fort Jones

No state plaque stands here; the county's 1946 bronze honors the soldiers and names three who stayed on as settlers. The valley they settled had already been promised. In November 1851, a year before the dragoons arrived, Redick McKee's treaty with the Shasta set aside a reservation in Scott Valley, a few square miles of farmland, while leaving most of the valley to the newcomers. The Senate never ratified it. By 1856 many Shasta had been removed to reservations in Oregon, and the ground went to men like Bryan, Griffin and Salverson.

Fort Jones 1852-1858 On this ground there was established Oct 16 1852 a military post by Companies A and B First United States Dragoons from April 23 1853 until June 23 1858 the date of its abandonment this fort was garrisoned by Company E 4 th US Infantry Named in honor of Colonel Roger Jones Brevet Major General the Adjutant General of the Army 1825-52 Dedicated this 14 th day of July 1946 to the officers and men who served here among whom were Sgts James Bryan and John Griffin and Pvt Gundor Salverson who upon their discharge became pioneer settlers of this valley erected in their memory by the County of Siskiyou
