Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County · Texas
Erected 1936
John Forbes, who built the house in 1836, was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1797 and settled in Nacogdoches in 1835. He became the first judge of Nacogdoches Municipality in November 1835 and was a commissioner with Sam Houston to treat with the Cherokees. The February 1836 Houston-Forbes treaty gave the Cherokees land between the Angelina and Sabine rivers; the Senate tabled it in December 1836 and voided it in December 1837. Forbes was mayor of Nacogdoches in 1856 and died there in 1880; he is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
