Site of Council Hill
Coldspring, San Jacinto County · Texas
Erected 1936
Council Hill stands on private land, and no public route leads to it. Texas Escapes calls it the home of Vernal B. Lea, brother of Mrs. Sam Houston; the plaque spells his name Vernon. The Handbook of Texas says Margaret Lea's relatives began moving to Texas soon after her 1840 wedding and moved in and out of the Houstons' lives for a quarter century, while the couple shifted between Cedar Point in summer and Huntsville or Independence in autumn. A Wikipedia account adds that Alabama-Coushatta friends visited Houston's home in his last years.
