Sinks of the Tejón

The name is a description of what the water does. Tejon Creek comes out of the mountains toward Kern Lake and, in the dry season, sinks into the ground before it gets there. The station six miles east of here took the name, and the stage lists also carry it as Alamo. In 1859 the post office that had served the Tejon reservation was moved down to this stop. The marker itself stands against a schoolyard fence at a crossroads.
What the plaque says
Sinks of the Tejon Six miles east of this point was the site of the Butterfield Stage Line station called Sinks of Tejon. Operating through present Kern County during 1858-1861 this famous line ran from St. Louis, Missouri, to San Francisco until the outbreak of the Civil War. Historical Landmark No. 540 Marker placed by California State Park Commission in cooperation with Kern County Historical Society, El Tejon Parlor No. 239 Native Daughters of the Golden West and Kern County Museum. Dedicated May 13, 1956.
