Sikh Temple Site
Stockton, San Joaquin County · California
No plaque marks the landmark. The first Sikh congregation in the United States gathered to pray at a farm camp near Stockton in November 1911, and the next year Punjabi farmers formed the Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan Society and bought this lot on Grant Street. The register says their wooden gurdwara of 1915 serves as the temple library beside the brick temple of 1930. The Gadar Party, organizing for India's independence from Britain, found money and members in this congregation, and the temple's kitchen fed anyone who came.
