Sheridan
Kingfisher County · Oklahoma
Erected by Oklahoma Historical Society and State Highway Commission, 1974
The general in the town's name had laid out the posts that watched over this country. Camp Supply was founded in the Cherokee Outlet on November 18, 1868, as the supply base for Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan's winter campaign against the southern Plains tribes. The next year Sheridan, commanding the Military Department of the Missouri, named the new post on Medicine Creek Fort Sill, for Brig. Gen. Joshua W. Sill, his West Point classmate killed at Stones River, Tennessee, in 1862. Troops from both posts later policed the land openings that created towns like this one.
