Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ
Terrell, Kaufman County · Texas
The congregation supports two institutions that carry a larger story. Southwestern Christian College began as the Southern Bible Institute in Fort Worth in 1948, designed, the Handbook of Texas says, as a college for Black students during segregation, though always open to anyone. It moved into the former Texas Military College buildings in Terrell in 1950. Boles Home, near Quinlan, opened November 24, 1924, with ten orphans on 436 acres given by William and Mary Boles, who asked the church to make at least $10,000 in improvements first.
What the plaque says
Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ Growing out of meetings held in members' homes, this church was organized in 1896. Services were held in Odd-Fellows Hall until 1900, when a small frame church was built on College Street. C. A. Norred became first full-time minister in 1914, the same year a brick sanctuary was erected. To accommodate the larger church membership, the present building was completed in May 1948 and enlarged in 1966. Southwestern Christian College in Terrell and the Boles Home for Children in Quinlan are actively supported by the congregation.
