Richard Brown

Henderson, Rusk County · Texas
Erected 1971

The Pine Grove church Richard Brown helped found was Cumberland Presbyterian. One history dates it to 1849 near Pine Hill, in a log cabin; a Rusk County cemetery site says about 1850 and names the Rev. Archibald H. Watkins as a key early minister. The surviving building dates to 1870 and is called the oldest existing church building in Rusk County. The congregation disbanded around 1905 or 1906. The church became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1966, a homecoming meets on the fourth Sunday in April, and Brown and his wife Nancy Jane lie in the cemetery.
