Refugio County
Refugio, Refugio County · Texas
Erected 1936
Refugio was one of the thirteen original counties of the Republic, and far larger than it is now. Goliad County took a share in 1841; Calhoun, San Patricio and Victoria counties followed in 1846, Bee in 1857 and Nueces in 1858, and Aransas County was cut away in 1871. Even the name was fought over: the municipality was briefly called Wexford, for the Irish county many settlers came from, until residents dropped it. The county seat stands where the Karankawas kept a village the Spanish called Paraje de los Copanes.
