Reading Brands
Jones County · South Dakota
Erected by Murdo City Council and State Highway Commission, 1957
Both faces of this bronze were cast in 1957 for the Murdo city council. The front is a primer in reading brands: a letter on its side is lazy, one with legs is walking, one set on a quarter circle is rocking, and a rafter joined to letters is called an open A. The reverse remembers the White River cow country of sixty years before, its forgotten post offices and the old outfits' brands, and admits that many ranches had or just took grazing rights on the Rosebud Reservation south of the White.
