Powder River Country

Kaycee, Johnson County · Wyoming

This copy of the exhibit stands in a town named for a ranch brand. The KC Ranch on the Middle Fork, where Nate Champion was killed in 1892, gave the settlement its letters, and when the government came to name a post office it wanted the word spelled out, so the KC became Kaycee. The office opened in January 1898, by one county history, a small store grew up beside it, and the town was incorporated in 1906. The same exhibit stands in Buffalo, where it marks the northern end of the same country.
