Post Vermillion or Dickson's Post
Yankton County · South Dakota
Erected by Clay Post 3061, V. F. W., Vermillion and State Highway Commission, 1966
Theophile Bruguier, whom the bronze puts later in charge, had trained in law near Montreal and came up the Missouri for the American Fur Company in 1836, learning Dakota at Fort Pierre. He married two daughters of War Eagle, Wanbdi Okicize, a Santee-born leader adopted by the Ihanktonwan (Yankton), and they had thirteen children. In 1849 Bruguier and War Eagle's family settled where the Big Sioux meets the Missouri, the farm and trading post that began Sioux City. War Eagle died there in 1851 and was buried on the bluff, and Bruguier was reburied near him in 1926.
