Historical Marker · No. 619
Plum Creek Station
Stanley County · South Dakota
Erected by Matt A. Brown, Chamberlain, 1951
The stone gives the station eight years, 1878 to 1886, but the road it served lasted far longer. Fort Pierre's historians date the Fort Pierre to Deadwood trail from 1876 to 1906 and its official closing to 1908. Keeping its route visible fell to private hands, first to Matt A. Brown of Chamberlain with this stone in 1951. In 1975 Roy and Edith Norman set 52 signs, about one every two miles, from the Missouri River bridge at Fort Pierre to the Pennington County line, and in 2008 more than 500 riders retraced the trail on a hundredth-anniversary ride.
